I have-
core 2 quad q6600 GO @ 3.1 Ghz
4GB kingston ddr2 RAM @1066Mhz
GTX 260 216 edition Zotac
780i Motherboard
450W corsair vx PSU

My CPU runs idle at about 50C and actualy hit 80C on load, i have a fuzzy bios and can hardly overclock past 3.1.
When i do overclock my games fail and freeze.

Is it faulty or do you have any recomendations

It's only faulty if it won't remain stable at stock speed. What CPU cooler are you using?

If it runs that hot at ilde and under load at stock speed, good luck for sure trying any overclocking. First thing you need to do is figure out why it is running so hot.

It shouldn't be faulty, can you try another cooler?

^lol.

@OP: Re seat the CPU cooler.

Q6600s are relatively power hungry, as modern CPUs go, and that cooler looks no better than stock. It might even be worse than stock. I'd get a different cooler, honestly. A Xigmatek or something similar will drop your temps a ton.

An AC 7 would have been a better buy.

Not sure what fuzzy logic is, i mean often my POST and BIOS is all shaky and fuzzy making it hard too see.

Sounds like a graphics card issue (probably due to overheating), to me. The CPU is getting quite hot which could be from bad case ventilation. If the inside of the case is getting too warm, the GPU is probably overheating also. I suggest a serious campaign to cool everything down.
To test my theory, try leaving the side of the case off and directing a box fan at it. If things stabilize, then you have a heat issue.

So do you reccomend a new CPU fan like the arctic 7 and possibly a GPU fan?
I could also replace the graphics card, is that necessary?

I had a very similar problem.. but got it solved now. I had heat sink fan fitted loosely on CPU. May be you should look into the same.

So you had a fuzzy bios??

no but CPU temp when system was idle used to be around 50C and even light load like watching movie would pull it up to 80C.

i have details in my thread here : http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/262451-28-core-temp

Why are you using VGA?

I have three motherboards and swap the CPUs around just for the fun of it. Between the G31, P5Q SE PLUS, and the P5N-D, I thought it was coincidence that on stcok and overclock the same settings, the 750i chipset motherboard seemed to make the CPUs run warmer than the other boards.

Maybe you're onto something here about nForce 700 boards?

Are all four cores reading the same high temps? Could be that your CPU cooler is not seated tight enough.

What's the RPM on the CPU cooler? Did you set the BIOS to run the CPU fan on silent mode or perfromance mode?
