What will happen if the chip set of a motherboard overheat?

same thing that happens when anything over heats. gradually its life span will deteriorate until it finally gives out. If it doesn't do so instantly. Depends what kind of set up and temps we are talking here. need more info

Your looking at your system crashing or maybe not making through post, if the chip set is running too hot. Decent case air flow is usually enough to solve most heat issues. If that doesn't work, there are "spot cooling" fans you can buy, to target the problem area.

x2 even if it will post and boot the chances of it being a stable system boot are highly unlikely.
