Recently upgraded my monitor from a Hyundai 4:3 19" 7ms LCD with a resolution of 1280x1024 to a Hanns-G 16:10 27.5" 3ms LCD with a resolution of 1920x1200.

The Hanns-G is currently being powered by an EVGA 9600GT oc'd to 700/2000 (650/1800 stock) but I have an opportunity to purchase a used Visiontek 4870 512MB for ($100) from a friend.

I understand that 1GB RAM is preferred for gaming at 1920x1200 and above with all the eye candy but wonder if 512MB is capable of running 1920x1200 with eye candy in the real world. Or, should I just put the $100 towards a gpu with 1GB RAM instead.

Gaming is the focus and I currently play; Fallout 3, CoD4, CoD:WaW, Moh:Airborn, Far Cry2, FEAR, FEAR2.

Reaching out to the forum denizens for opinions on whether the 4870 would be a worth the upgrade over the 9600GT. Opinions and comments welcome. Thanks!

Yes its a worthy upgrade,
The 512 will run 1920x1200 but thats the point where the 1gb starts to show a differance. Up to that they are more or less the same card performance wise.
I would guess that you wouldnt need to turn the settings down much to get the frame rates up. Turning shadows down usually gives the most benefit for least loss of quality.

The 512 MB version should be fine in most games. 1 GB is no doubt better. But its not worth the increase in price.
