I have an older maxtor 1 touch 200gb external HDD that has data on it, but when it is connected to windows 7, win7 says I must format the HDD before it can be used. How can I access the data on this drive?

have you tested it on another computer?

yes, just did this - tested it on two other pc's. one a win 7, the other win xp. both have similar symptoms. you hear the little beep that the os discovered the device, and eventuially a drive letter / entry was gen'd in my computer, BUT there is no space info next to it , and when you click on it in my computer, it hangs. i am sure there is data on it.

are they any tools or procedures to get at the data , if only to get it off b4 a format?

I had the same problem. There is usually nothing wrong with the drive.

I took it out of the enclosure, plugged it into my PC using an IDE cable and fired it up under Windows.

Came up as completely free/empty zilch. Slight panic since it had lots of pictures etc.

However, then went across to Linux, mounted the drive. Linux moaned that NT had not closed the drive properly, fixed it and let me get to the data.

So you probably need to do the same. It worked fantastically great for me.

I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 that did the exact same thing on my Win7 rig.
I downloaded the Maxtor Manager software and saved it to desktop.
Opened it by going to properties/compatability/Vista 64
Priveleges checked to Admin
Worked right away.
I understand your drive is older but i would give it a shot.
