AMD 965 overclocking over 4.0 PLEASE Help.

Hello could some one help me get a higher overclock ive reached " The wall " my temps are running in the low 30`s low 40 peek and i cant get any more out of it. Im new to overclocking and from what i have been told as long as your temps are low you have room for higher clocks but i cant get there. Im running Amd 965 BE with a crosshair III formula and 8 gigs of mushkin blackline ddr3 1600 T1 fan cooled ram in windows 7 x64 (GFX 5850 BE i disabled eyefinity during all overclocking) and im on liquid cooling ( EK supreme high flow cpu and motherboard water blocks) in a Thermaltake Kandolf LCS case

fsb : 200
cpu x20 1.5v temp 31
ram 8 Gigs @ 1600 @ 1.95 T1 OCZ 4000 rpm fan cooler
NB 2400 @ 1.3v temp 34
SB 1.2v temp 32
HT 2400 @ 1.3v

Any ideas id like to get to 4.2 or higher

  1. Whoever told you that was wrong. every chip is different, and they all have a physical limit. If adding voltage no longer stabilizes you, that means you have hit the limit of your chip.

sorry, but that's as far as you can go. (nothing to scoff at though, its a very nice overclock)
  2. Thank you... Thats kinda what i figured... but i was hoping it was my lack of experience and knowledge holding me back not the chip. I guess i didn't get a" golden chip" LOL
  3. Thats why those liquid nitrogen guys still can't overclock to infinity despite their chips being -200C. They can only add so much voltage and get higher overclocks until the chips break. Those guys are crazy and has nothing to lose.
  4. Fair enough... i guess ill be happy with what my O.C and stop now before i break something lol

My first post was indicating you take a look at the black edition overclock guide, even though you may very well be at your CPUs limitations I do see some things that could be affecting you getting any higher than you are and they're covered in the guide.

I do have a question for you as to what exactly is your GPU configuration in relation to what CPU-Z is showing?

Dropping from 8G of memory 4 x 2g, to 4G of memory 2 x 2G in the primary ASUS dual channel slots, may very well get you a higher clock, that's covered in the guide.

Overclockers Club only ran 4G of memory when they tested the M/B, but they were using a 955 cpu to OC with.
  6. ive been doing all my overclocking with the gfx at stock speed 765 - 1125.
ill try dropping back to 4 gigs of ram i re read the guide i must have missed that note initially. sorry

im getting this with prime 95 as i increase either multiplier or voltage, even if im successful with 32M hyperpi this makes me curious weather ive hit my cpu`s max potential or if i have something out of wack some where else in my O.C

ill try the 4 gigs of ram and post the results thank you for your help
  7. One thing your Crosshair III Formula has is the Mem OK button on the M/B which is a sweet feature for syncing multiple memory modules that ASUS has added, but if you'll look in your M/B manual around 2.4.2 Memory Configurations it states, "It is recommended to install the memory modules from the orange slots for better overclocking capability", since that's in the manual but you have no orange slots, they probably kept that from the Crosshair II Formula manual and are referencing and indicating the blue primary slots.

At least that is what the downloadable online manual for your M/B states.

Also you might try dropping your NB and HT back to 2000mhz.

I suggest recording all your settings for your stable 4G OC, then try using the guide and see what that gets you, if it doesn't pan out for you, you can setup the BIOS settings to your 4G settings and be back where you are now.
