Hi

I have an Asus Rampage Formula motherboard. I want to purchase a 4G kit ofKingston HyperX memory. There are 2 options:

1.) KHX6400D2LLK2/4G, 4GB 800MHz DDR2 Non-ECC Low-Latency CL4 (kit of 2), 4-4-4-12, 1.9V

or

2.)KHX8500D2K2/4G, 4GB DDR2 1066MHz Non-ECC CL5 (kit of 2 – 2GB), 5-5-5-15, 2.2V

The one is rated at 800MHz with 4-4-4-12 latency. The other is rated at 1066MHz with 5-5-5-15 latency.

Which kit is better? Lower speed with better latency or higher speed with worse latency?

Faster memory does not translate into more application speed - You'd need benchmarking software to tell the difference.

I would choose the first option, since the 800Mhz stuff is generally cheaper.

------------------------------ Which Chip? Well, it depends on which set of thieving b@stardz you choose to support: The ones who use insider trading to enrich themselves while running their company into the ground, or the ones who illegally pay vendors to not support the first group.

Both are the same price

Then it doesn't matter - the 800 should be less stressful on your mobo, but... <shrug>

Is one shinier than the other? Or maybe color coordinated with your motherboard? ;)

Both looks identical too

Number one, hands down. The JEDEC standard for DDR2 voltage is 1.8. At that voltage, which is your mobo default and where it will be after any BIOS reset, the first set will likely work, at close to its advertised timings (perhaps 5-5-5-15). OTOH, the second set will either be unstable, or will operate at much worse timings (no better than 6-6-6-18).

Thank you for your input. Ordering the 800MHz with better timings as we speak. Thanks again.
