In a few weeks, ill be upgrading my motherboard, video cards(crossfire), cpu and memory. I have 2 hard drives a 160GB 5400RPM with windows vista ultimate 64-bit, then a 1TB HD for everything else. When i upgrade everything, will i just put my windows cd back in my drive, and re-install windows with all my new stuff put in?
No. You'll need to backup your files first if you want to save any. I just finished a format and windows reinstall. The repair option won't work when changing out motherboards.
I boot a number (8!) of OSs off two pair of RAID0's; the obvious solution, and one you should implement seeing as how you'll need to do a reinstall anyway (and will doubtless want to upgrade it to Win7 ASAP [it's better than the buzz has it!]), is to keep all the OS stuff restricted to your boot drive, and locate EVERYTHING else on the 1TB (there, I have a pair of RAID1 RE3s) - that way, the OS is isolated from the data, and makes the data drive 'immune' to changes of OS; for many of the main locations, it's merely a matter of right clicking on the start menu item, and relocating it; for things like the IE 'favorites', the free version of TotalIdea's TweakVI:
http://www.totalidea.com/product.php?Product=TweakVI is a godsend - you simply change all the perinent paths, and do a reboot - and voila - there they all are! (They also have already released a version that works great for Win7) There will be a few loose ends - depending upon your email program, you'll likely want to re-locate its records file - I use Outlook, and it's a two step process to creat a new .pst file, move your info there, and then delete the old path. Because my boot partitions are all on RAID0s, I treat them like 'volatile' storage; when I'm happy with the current install, I image them to a backup drive (restore points are all well and good, but it always seems to me that, whatever one I want - it's the one the system last deleted!), so I can be pretty cavalier about reinstalling Win7 three times in a row to experiment with getting my AV garbage to finally work...

Right, thats what i have, the 160GB is STRICTLY O/S only and the 1TB is ONLY for games and data like music and other stuff. And im thinking about buying the vista home premium 64 bit with the windows 7 free upgrade, cuz the dude i bought the computer from had a pirated version of vista 64 bit ultimate on the pc, and i had it for about 2 months then i downloaded the windows 7 RC, and it said im using a pirated O/S, so i was mad of course because the O/S backup cds he gave me for the computer didnt work in fixing the problem, so i through out the cds and im going to buy a new O/S, and i want windows 7, but im not waiting for october for it to come out, so ill get a real version of vista, then ill have a free upgrade to windows 7 along with it.
