We hear many things about PCI slots like x1, x4, x8 and x16. Now I heard another term PCI Express 2.0.
I don't know what is that?
Now I want to know that what is the difference between PCI Express x16 and PCI Express 2.0?
Double the bandwidth. Original PCIe has 250Mbps of bandwidth per lane. (16x electrical would be 250Mb x 16) PCIe 2 has each lane at 500Mbps. They are backwards compatible, so a PCIe 1 card should work in a PCIe 2 slot.

1x 2x 3x.... is how many lanes. Think of it like filling your pool with a hose except you can use 1 2 3 .. hoses at a time.
There is 1.0 / 1.1 / and 2.0
1 and 1.1 are the same speed and and compatible with each other
1.1 and 2.0 are also compatible but the 2.0 is twice as fast
1.0 and 2.0 are not compatible
The only video cards that can saturate a 16x 1.0 connection is the GTX 295 and HD4870 x2. And it is so close that they only gain a few fps switching to 2.0
