What does it mean when my PC prompts me for a network passkey

my wife's boss is trying to hook up his laptop wireless at his house and was prompted for a network passkey where would that be found

It means that the network has wireless security enabled -- apply the correct passphrase to the laptop's wireless adapter utilties or Windows Networking.

By using the wireless scan feature should be able to detect the wireless router and which security protocol it is using.

If all else fails can always connect laptop to router with an ethernet cable (usually one supplied in the carton with the router) which will bypass wireless.
