Is the Auto-Optimize feature in Cacheman effective?

Outer Technologies (http://www.outertech.com) wants an extra $25 to
make this feature active.

Cacheman, I believe, was one of the PC magazine's best freeware
utilities and seems to help some on my XP box with 512 meg of RAM.
But it still bogs down if the apps are too heavy (Photoshop,
Compupic).

Experiences, thoughts, ideas welcome.............
