I'm really stuck with them two.

I'm going to build a new computer and I have chosen the following parts

EP45-UD3R
4GB 1066 RAM
HD4770
CoolerMaster RC690
CoolerMaster 550W

All i need now is a CPU.

I'm really stuck between the E8500 and Q9550.

You couldn't say the things I do on the computer are CPU intensive or GPU intensive (hence the cheap card 4770)

Programs I run

Firefox
MSN
Word
Excel
Photoshop and Illustrator occasionally
Songbird

I AM going to overclock definitely, I am thinking of an aftermarker cooler. I will play games like Far Cry 2, Crysis and stuff but not often.

All contributions are appreciated.

Go for the 9550, its future proofed better than a 8500, you can over clock it, Windows 7 will run like a dream on it. And Photoshop will render better.

All round good really

e8500 is better in games but as games will be multi core capable then that will soon pass.

Buying dual cores makes kitty cry.

+1 for the quad core for future proofing. But your temps will be higher.

He could by a better HSF and put that in..

That would solve the temperature issue... For a good value cooler - Artic Cooling

A year ago I would have argued for the dual but with the price drops and similar default clockspeeds it has to be an OEM Q9550 and an AC7 + beer.
