PSU/GPU Changes - Noise!

Hey there,

I recently purchased a PC second-hand, and I was looking to make a few adjustments to reduce fan noise. Here are the relevant specs:

Antec 900 Case
3870X2
OCZ EliteXStream 1000W PSU
AMD Phenom 9750

I was planning on replacing the case fans with more silent fans (not a huge fan of the LED's anyway). But my question is about the PSU and GPU. The PSU is really too much for me. I would rather not run crossfire and have a lower wattage PSU (the fans on it are quiet loud). I was thinking about selling the PSU (it's an expensive piece of hardware) and the 3870X2 and buying a 500-600W PSU and a 4870.

Would this reduce noise considerably? Would I see much of a performance difference? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You can probably quiet the case fans with a speed controller , or running them at a lower voltage . At 7 volts they will spin slower , make less noise and move less air [ but still enough ]
The mod is simple

Cut the lead to the LED while you are at it and they wont bother you again .

You are right about your PSU . Its over kill . 600 watts will be plenty if its from a good manufacturer .

4870's arent that quiet , especially in open cases like the antec 900 .
But if the other mods dont quiet it enough changing to a 4870 will be a good upgrade and you can add an aftermarket cooler like the silenX xtrema pro
