I've been having bad problems with the 522 DVR provided by Dish Network.
DVR Content playback had audio/video synch problems, color fade, and popping
noises.
I got so fed up with this issue, I called the Echostar corporate number and
asked for someone in software engineering for the 522. I left a voice
message (a nice one) for a senior manager and gave my number.
To my surprise, a technician on the development team called me back and
explained that they are about to issue a patch for the 522 that will bring
the version level of the software to L206 (from L205). He said that this
patch was purely a maintenance release and that their testing had solved the
issues that I've been experiencing with content recorded to my DVR 522.
Said that it had something to do with the interaction of the CPU and the
Drivers for the Box. Said that their senior execs had been riding this
issue with a business partner until it got fixed. Said that the patch would
be made available to every customer on the Dish system by 10/26/2004.
If anyone has the DVR 522, you should wake up on 10/27/2004 and check your
system info and the software version should read L206...and that this is
supposed to fix it.
They also said to be sure to power off the unit every night as this allows
the system to "de-frag" and re-configure. Which is a hassle....so...I'm
waiting for this L206 update with baited breath.
They also said that the USB port on the back of the 522 would not be WiFi
ready anytime soon as they have too many security concerns with someone
getting into their system and re-tasking their satellites. On the current
model with phone line, the phone company is liable for the security policy
of who rides the lines.
