That's a pretty old machine. The motherboard may have fried or a component may have come loose. Check the RAM first. I have a nice Sony Vaio notebook and a Compaq that is six years old now and still works like its brand new! I have rebuilt a few gateways and I find the components inside them are not that great.

I think you're right about it being old but I connected it to an external monitor and it seem to work fine.

Then that ribbon cable that links the LCD and the motherboard may have come undone. It is also possible the electronics in the LCD just gave in. If it works with an external monitor, the graphics chipset should still be fine.
