Computer hangs

i got a brand new system

i have a phenom II 940 with a gigabyte 790gpud4h board nad xfx 4850

i have installed xp with sp3 but when i try to run in vga mode with the graphics card plugged in it automatically restrats before logging in but when im doin it from my onboard hd 3300 its working fine wat may be the problem?

system specs would help.... never the less check your bios settings if its a pci card make it boot pci and pci-e...well you get it.
