New External USB Drive

Just hooked up a new WD Elements 2TB external USB 2.0 drive to my Win7(64bit) system and all is good... works perfectly...
Just curious why it shows as a "Hard Disk Drive" and not a as "Device With Removable Storage" like a USB Flash/Thumb drive does?

Does it have to do with the fact that it was pre-formated as NTFS as opposed to FAT32 like Flash/Thumb drives?

Like I said... just curious

I believe that has something to do with it. It may also have something to do with the driver that Windows installs. Any external drive that I've hooked up has shown as a hard disk and not a removable storage drive as well.
