The GTX 275 is about the same as a GTX 280. The 4890 is a bit higher and surpasses the GTX 280 at times and is out now. Either way the GTX 280 is not the way to go.Then which would you choose? The 4890 or the gtx 275. I'm kinda don't want to have to deal with Ati's crappy drivers.

The 280 is going to be phased out. ( I read that in the article," Nvidia Geforce GTX 275 Preview: A well timed Retaliatory Strike."
Im stuck on this question also but Im thinking either the 4870 (go crossfire with another), 4890 (crossfire with another), GTX 285 (SLi with another) or a GTX 295. I dont think I will go into DX11 right away. I will have this i7 gaming system for a while and wont upgrade for a few years.

I'd get the 275. It's cheaper and about the level of the 280, but with a little more shader power due to the slightly higher clocks I belive. It's pretty close to the 285 as it is. The only time the 280 will noticeably come out on top is in games where the 1GB of RAM will be utilized and the 275 will suffer slightly with it's 896MB of RAM. Also the 275 is made from a smaller process than the 280 so it uses less power.
And you have benchmarks comparing top clocked gtx 280 or 285 and 4890? I know you can clock the 4890 to higher freqs but how does the 4890 maxed out benchmarks number compared to 280 or 285 maxxed out. Thats like saying an amd cpu can clock higher than an intel cpu so it is faster. It is all how the cards use what they have and I would love to see true benchmarks with both cards or all 3 maxxed out.
yeah, but if the 4890 clocks higher then the gtx 280 before you overclock it, and it will not outperform the gtx in stock format, what makes you think that when both cards are over clocked that it will outperform it then.
you should stop pushing for the ati card just because you like ati, the OP didn't even ask about the 4890 he asked about the nvidia cards
the gtx 280 is better than the ati 4890 and that is it. and the one the OP asked about is now $259.99 at newegg, so the price for performance factor that ati fans always bring up is GONE in this conversation, he should buy the better card for the same money and it is the BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024E GeForce GTX 280 for $10.00 more then the cheapest 4890
the gtx 275 has the same performance, read a review that is unbiased (i've seen reviews that put either card on top, depending on who wrote it) each card has it's high and low points equally, one is better at one game and the other is better at another, one is louder and the other runs hotter. one like hi screen res the other likes low res.
the 4890 beats the gtx 260 if that makes you happy
lets not make this a pointless debate of nvidia or ati

A GTX 280 can not overclock well, ask L1qu1d for his results. A 4890 can overclock to roughly 910-950 Mhz on the clock and start matching the GTX 285, which is a heavily overclocked GTX 280. The 4890 can go farther still so it wins I suppose. That is all somewhat irrelevent since the 4890 has the same performance on stock as a GTX 280, with a few blow exchanged.
I'm not sure why GoldenEye and I got marked down, but our points were valid. The GTX 275 was not out at the time, the 4890 performs slightly better than a GTX 275, and either one is in the same performance bracket as a GTX 280. All this said, if the OP goes ATI then he can get another for crossfire later since he is getting a P45 motherboard.
The GTX 280 is old tech and does not even offer any extra performance over the GTX 275 and 4890, and the 4890 is still cheaper with MIR.

Between the GTX 275 and GTX 280: Go with the GTX 275, it offers MUCH better price/performance.
But between the 4890 and GTX 275: Go with the better deal (which right now is the 4890). So far they seem to be on par with performance, but the 4890 is slightly less costly.
Here is a good deal on the 4890: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?Product...

All very true, but he has a 630W PSU, so that shouldnt pose a problem.
Get the GTX 275!!!
If I were you I would get the XFX GTX 275 XXX Edition (Factory OC), thats the card that I ended up getting after months of researching on what card to get, and oh boy am I glad I did my reasearch, It runs like a dream!! I cannot wait to see that babe in SLI
If you care about your games having the best visuals... then go for a Nvidia GPU, but if you think that speed is everything then your best off following the ATI fanboys...
ATI card do have faster frame rates (at times), but not enough to make a differance, well not enough for the human eye to even notice... so thats why most people tend to go for ATI cards, because they go a ants fart bit faster.
But for the lose of like 1 or 2 FPS slower on a monster of a game like Crysis the nvidia cards really excell on the graphics quallity, in allmost every game nvidia's graphics quallity beats ATI's
but yes, to answare the question... Get the GTX 275, you will not be disapointed!
