1500W power supply unit is very expensive.

When is a good time to use a 1500W PSU?

What about the future, will CPU's and motherboards and graphics card require 1500W psu?

I mainly use the pc for games - high end graphics card, cpu's.

More about : 1500w power supply unit

If you are running 4x GTX295 or HD4870x2.

No more so than today. Future CPUs and graphics cards shouldn't use much more power due to using a smaller process.

For a single GPU system, a good quality 500W PSU is plenty.

You don't need a 1500W PSU. Even the highest end gaming systems right now can be run off of a 1000W PSU.

a 1kw PSU would handle that.

That too.

4 GTX 295s or 4 HD 4870x2s (8 GPUs total) would probably overload a 1KW unit at full load. Of course, since 4 GPUs is the most supported by drivers, I don't see why you would ever have that.

1500 watts comes in very handy for starting cars, minor arc welding, etc. An indispensable item around my house...

u dont need 1500 w psu. u can just use a 3-faze power connector on the wall, if u have one in your house. i am sure it will be enough.

Exactly, the other 2 cards would be at idle the entire time, unless you make custom drivers. My system only pulls 800w from the wall when running prime95 and 3dmark Vantage.

There are Folding rigs with 4x GTX295 or 9800GX2. The drivers support 8 GPUs, just not in SLI.

There is no such thing as 8 GPU's support 4x GTX295 is 4 GPU's, 2 GPU per card, meaning 2 GTX295 is quad SLI since a GTX295 has 2 GPU's in one PCB...unless i misinterpreted your question

4 GTX 295 would be 8 GPUs (1 GTX 295 has 2 GPUs).

QFE - Both nvidia and ATI drivers support 8 GPU's - just not SLI..

You may have a CUDA enabled app and love the performance 4 x Asus MARS (aka 8 x GTX285's) would offer - I am not sure that 1500kw would be enough for some people....

There is no such thing as 4 GTX295s!! That would be 8 GPU's and nothing supports that yet, hardware nor software! 2 GTX295's is 4 GPU's.

I agree 4 295 gtx is pure B/S.not going to happen.

Perhaps if your using an extended ATX case and put in 4 x 4890s, using a really high vcore on a Phenom II, have 6 hard drive Raid array, tons of case fans, more lights than a christmass tree, 4 blu ray burns and you plan to burn stuff with them all at the same time, and hook up a toaster or coffee maker to it, then I can see a case for such a PSU :D .

who said 4x GTX 295's wasn't going to happen?

remember that 23x GTX 295 folding@home thing?

See above. Both ATI and Nvidia drivers support 8 GPUs. It would allow for ridiculous CUDA type computation.

I would certainly hope that 1500kW would be enough for anyone. After all, that's 1500 1kW PSUs... :D

On a more serious note, I think 4 Asus MARS GTX 295s would run fine on a 1500W PSU.

Yes. As I already stated there are Folding@home rigs with either 4x GTX295 or 9800GX2. There are various mobos with 4+ PCIe slots and the drivers support 8 GPUs. They do not run in SLI mode.

why would you want 4x295gtx graphics cards? for gamers who play on 30" monitors?
a b U Graphics card
a b à CPUs
June 22, 2009 4:31:33 AM

For gamers, 2 GTX 295s is the best - drivers don't support more than 4 GPUs working together for a single monitor. 8GPUs (4 GTX 295s) is only useful for driving a whole bunch of monitors or for something like Folding@home.
June 24, 2009 9:31:29 PM

maybe someone has an amplifier in their pc to run their home theater while using a super overclocked i7 using a phase change cooler and 4X GTX 295s to run folding@home at the same time.
June 24, 2009 9:36:22 PM

SLi only allows for 2 GTX295, so for gaming thats the max setup.

However, so long as you have 4 PCI-E slots, theres nothing stopping you from loading up a mobo with 4 GTX295 for the purpose of GPGPU applications such as folding.

Some people , like myself use GPU's for other task's not just gaming. I don't use GPU's for gaming at all as a matter of fact. I use it to password crack or decrpyt password hashs. Using cuda cores on GPU's out preforms the power of CPU's any day of the week. I hope this answers your question. A good exsample if you are interested in reading up on this would be here at this site. http://mytechencounters.wordpress.com/2011/04/03/gpu-pa...

By using CUDA compatible GPU's , I can speed up a process that would normally take YEARS, into hours or a few days. hope this was of some help from a non-gamers view. -814ck0u7
