Hey,

I currently have a 3800+ X2 with a 7800GT, 2gb of SDRAM (i know grimeh) 939 board.

I like AMD, and i like to game but nothing too hardcoar mostly WoW and WC3 fallout3, although i wouldnt mind being able to play deadspace max graphics and a bit of Left4dead.

Well i need a new rig my old one is startin to annoy me, o/cing is fine by me my current rig is about 25% ocd, i just am torn between if ddr3 is worth it since am2+ can support all the newer cpus.

Personally I don't find DDR3 to cost much more than DDR2, and that difference alone shouldn't be enough to justify sticking with AM2+ instead of AM3.

However if your looking at a quad, the Phenom II X4 940(socket AM2+) offers much better bang for buck than the AM3/AM2+ compatible Phenom II X4 955. Personally I stuck with AM2+ because I was able to get my Phenom II 940 with motherboard for less than the cost of the Phenom II X4 955.

Personally I would decide AM2+/AM3 after you decide on a processor as the bulk of them are compatible with both anyways.

I would go with AM3. As loneninja said, the price difference between DDR2 and DDR3 is narrowing every day, and with AM3 your already set for whatever new may come down the pike.

Aren't people who have AM2+ already set for the AM3 CPU's? That's what I thought...

For now. Noone knows how long AMD will continue to include DDR2 memory controllers, and when they decide to axe that, AM2+ will be finished.

There's also some nice AM3 motherboards out now. A particularly good combo deal with the 720 BE is the Asus M4A78T-E

also make sure you check the resale price for that 3800+ x2 some of the 2 core 939 CPUs still sell for a good price.
