If I understand your question correctly, then I think the answer to your question is no. From what I can tell, the 965 chipset will support 2x2GB to reach its 4GB maximum, but not 1x4GB. Plus, a single 4GB DDR2 stick of RAM will be VERY expensive compared to 2x2GB.
