Windows xp problems My computer lags for 1 second

Hello,
I just recently built a new computer.....With a bit of help.

Every so often it will just lag for 1 second and then everything is fine.

Any ideas on what could cause this?

Specs -
Win Xp
i7 2600
nvidea geforce 560 ti
4 gigs corsair ram
MSI i7 compat mobo

Maybe you have something in the background running that's causing this...
Go to start>run and type msconfig
Go to services tab and uncheck things that you don't need and that aren't vital.
Also, try updating drivers for your video card.

Thank you for the response.

It mainly happens when I am gaming.

I've looked at the msconfig and everything seems to be legit. All MS stuff along with
Mcafee stuff.

I'll assume it's a driver issue for the card, but the latest update from nvidia would not let me run my current games. I had to roll back.

My next step would be to go ahead and upgrade(?) to Windows 7.

Really did not want to do that.

I personally don't like Win 7...

Anyway,
I assume you have direct x, try updating that...
Or try changing different setting( for anything you can disable, enable , change) directly from inside your nvidia panel (not Windows setting), by trial and error...
If I'll think of something else I'll let you know...

--Just as an update--

I went ahead and installed Win7 and it seems to have fixed it.
I still do not know what caused this, though.
