Can someone tell me if the WD single platter 500 GB HDD have arrived or not. Their site does not say anything about no. of platters.
if possible, please tell me how to identify (from model/serial no. - western digital) whether the drive has single platter or multiple platters

thanks in advance

Hi Karen,
Haven't seen any info about the WD form factors. Their specs don't give any head # or platter # data anymore.

Might just call WD tech support 800 275-4932 and even the first line techs would probably have to look it up!

This site has some useful information regarding platters:

http://yertech.blogspot.com/2009/08/35-hdd-platter-capa...

At least the following 500Gb models/revisions should be single platter:

Caviar Black:
WD5001AALS revision 00E3A0

Caviar Blue:
WD5000AAKS revisions 00M9A0/00D2B0/00V1A0/65V0A0

Caviar Green:
WD5000AADS revisions 00S9B0/00L4B

To benefit from this information, however, you would need to know the drive's revision before purchasing. For example, some revisions of WD5001AALS still have 2x250 Gb platters.
