I've stettled on a MB and am ready to order DDR3.
Tom's recently reviewed some DDR3 and wound up liking a Crucial product that is packed three each 2gig sticks.
Considering that all the DDR3-capable MBs feature dual channel, what good is this?
With four slots you do 2, 4, 8, etc.
Right? And it is pretty unlikely you'd have a single piece of DDR3.
It just doesn't seem to make sense.
Am I missing something here?

You're completely missing the Core i7 motherboards. Core i7 has an integrated 3-channel memory controller, so you get best performance by adding RAM in groups of 3. That's what these memory kits are aimed at.
