I am looking to piece together my new system. I currently have a Asus Rampage Formula and G.Skill 1066 4gb ram. I am trying to decide which processor i want to go with. I do game(BF2/COD) and I also fool around with Photoshop and dreamweaver.

I am thinking i can either go with a E8500 or Q6600. What do you guys think and which one would you choose? I have a 19" monitor and will probably pick up a radeon 4850 as well. My current set up is a e8400 oc'd 3.0, 8800gts evga vid card, 2gb of OCZ ram with a coolermaster hyper x heatsink.

Thanks.

well since you have on 2gb of ocz, have you thought about upgrading to 4?

Q6600 has went up in price and the Q8200 has went down, should look into it.

E8500 is a nice chip aswell but, if you do alot of other multitasking things then an Q8200 should be good.

For a 4850, should check on brands, HIS or Sapphire would be nice.

Well at first you say you have G.skills at 1066 4gb then you say your current is at 2gb ocz......

I can't figure out why you are doing this...for the price you paid for that mobo, you can have a PC that will perform much better in games that either of the ones you are planning to build. Just OC your CPU and return that stuff you bought, then stick a 4870 or GTX 260 in your rig. Only reason to upgrade the CPU would be for photoshop, in which case get a Q9550 and that GPU and reuse the rest of your components, it will still be cheaper and better than what you are planning.

If you bump your current e8400 a little more to 3.1ghz, that is the e8500. There's really no reason to spend the $190 for the e8500. The quad would be better for the photo editing and rendering. However, if you went with a quad, you should look more along the lines of the q9550 as noted above.

Thanks for the replies everyone,

I got the Rampage Mobo from a friend who went to core i7. I ended up paying just a little over $100. I wouldn't have purchased that full price. My current setup has 2gb ram on an Asus P5N-E-SLI that is why i was looking to move up on the ram.

My first thought was to go with an e8500 and oc to 4.0ghz. I figure with that mobo and ram that should be pretty easy. I guess i wasn't sure if a e8500 oc'd at 4.0 would be a better option then a q6600 possibly oc'd to 3.4 but have heard the run pretty hot. I will take a look at the Q8200 and to check on how good they are on overclocking.

Thanks.

Well, every one here is right about the cpu, I just gave you something to look at but, knew it would be wrong, just wasn't thinking of it at the time. You could easily oc the e8400 to 4.0ghz. Got the motherboard right, so get your ram and a s1283 heatsink to cool the cpu and instead of waisting the money on a new cpu that is just the same as a e8400 in performance(mabye a couple percentage difference), get a sapphire 4870 1gb or gtx 260 to boost your gpu performance.

E8400 will hit 4.0ghz on that mobo.

Hey everyone, I am sorry but i am using a friends system and he is running the e8400. My current system is with a e4300 with an Asus P5N-E-SLI.

It sucks cause when i was posting i was thinking of buying his e8400 and I posted about the e8400 and not about the 4300, brain fart. So lets start over if thats okay. What's the better processor the E8500 @4.0 or the Q6600 at 3.4-3.6 to go along with the Rampage Board.

Thanks.

Ok now its making sense...

The better processor depends on what you will use your PC for. Most games will benefit more from the faster cores of the E8500 than having more cores at lower speeds. Most game engines are only written to use 1 or 2 cores for now, there are only a handful of games that can actually use a quad-core. However if you tend to run several programs at once then a quad core would be a good choice. If you do chose to use the Quad, then go for the Q9400 as it will run cooler and use less power. I would recommend going with the dual core unless you like to run IM, Itunes, and Frostwire on second monitor while you are gaming.

nice one toltec :).

If you plan to game as much as anything else, as xthekidx said, go with the e8500. The wouldn't even put the q6600 vs the e8500, rather the Q8200 vs the e8500. If your going to stick with quad, Q8200-Q9400.
