Read dvd-rom with no directory

Some time ago we transferred old home videos from VHS to DVD, using a stand-alone DVD burner. I now find that some of these DVDs were not "closed" properly, i.e. the directory was not written, and so cannot be read by a dvd player. When inserted into a DVD-rom reader (on a laptop), the computer claims that the DVD is "blank", although data has clearly been written. Is there a way to retrieve the data that is already on the DVD? These are precious videos, for which the original tape is gone.

  1. See if a friend has a computer with a DVD writer and a decent burning program like Roxio or Nero. You may be able to induce that to close the session or the disk.
