Where do I get a network security key?

Recently I purchased a HP laptop w/ windows 7. I have a desktop so, I bought a router for the wireless and it works. When I went to Mc Donald's to use my laptop on their WIFI I had to type in a network security key to get internet access. What is a network security key? I would like to use my laptop around town.

In my experience McDonalds are quite helpful to customers using their free wifi for the first time.

The network security key they (presumably) gave you would only apply to those premises -- it would be intended to stop non-customers (for example someone sittiing in a nearby parked car).
