Hey guys, I'm planning on doing some upgrading to my system but wanted some advice before I do. At the current moment I'm planning to do things bit by bit, first on the agenda being the CPU, motherboard, and RAM. Here's what I got so far off Newegg:

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000 (PC3 16000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

I don't think I would need to buy anything else other than that right away, I'm hoping I can plug the rest of my stuff in temporarily until I get the money to buy the rest of the stuff I'm planning on getting. I saw that the motherboard won't support DDR2 which is why I'm getting the new RAM. I know my 8800 GTS 512 will work on that board because it's a 2.0 card. I'd assume stuff like my DVD drive won't be an issue, and the power supply won't need to get upgraded since I'm not doing SLI or anything like that.

Just getting some feedback here since you guys helped me out before and did a very impressive job (my friend John who helped me build my system was very impressed that I did my research last time). Is this a good start for someone wanting to upgrade to i7?

PS another question I saw the board says it runs in triple channel for RAM, do I have to have 3 sticks of RAM or can I still use 2? That's one of my main questions I had.

I was looking at the motherboard specs and I don't think it'll support the 1600 RAM you got on there (someone correct me if I'm wrong), but it does say it'll work with the 1333 so I guess I'll go with that. I have a full tower so I definitely have room inside the case for a big fan. So anyway here's what I'm looking at right now for Upgrade Part 1:

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor - Retail

GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD3R LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail

Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 120mm SSO CPU Cooler - Retail

So this is what I've got so far for my first planned upgrade, then I'd work on saving up for other things like a new GPU, an M-Audio card for my recording I plan to do, a Blu-Ray burner, etc. If anyone has a better setup they'd like to share, feel free to give any advice. I greatly appreciate it!

Noctua/coolermaster V8/vigor monsoon is what i'd choose from.

Either ram will be great for you, 1600 is right on the same price almost as the 1333. You should be able to run it if not, stick with the 1333.

Well I'll take your guys' word for it and get the platinum RAM, I'll also check out that CPU cooler too. Thanks for the input!
