Forum Overclocking : CPUs Q6600 on GA-EP45-UD3P

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone here can help me overclock my Q6600 to 3.2Ghz+ on my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P mobo. I've tried in the past with little success (probably because I'm new to overclocking). After I made the changes and tried to boot, the computer would restart before or right after POST (can't remember exactly, it's been a while). Sometimes it would get into windows, sometimes it would restart like i mentioned before. I tried making BIOS changes according to what someone gave me on another forum with the same outcome. Anyways, if someone could help me out I would really appreciate it. Here's my specs:

CPU- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0
Motherboard- GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA775
Graphics- ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB
RAM- 4GB (2x2GB) Mushkin Enhanced Blackline DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Hard Drive- Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB
Power Supply- Cooler Master Real Power Pro 650W
Operating System- Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll try my best to answer them. Thanks!

Simply changing settings to what someone else said is rarely successful, there are just too many variables involved. Have you given the overclocking guide a read through? It will help you understand how to tweak most setting in the bios for a successful overclock.

Also if you want to post some bios settings we can get an idea of where you might be going wrong.

I just got done messing around with it, tried to OC to 3.2Ghz, 3.0Ghz, and 2.7Ghz. I get the same problem every time (reboots before I get into windows, before and after POST). Here are some of the BIOS settings:

Robust Graphics Booster: Auto
CPU Clock Ratio: 9x
CPU Frequency: 3.20Ghz

CPU Host Frequency (Mhz): 356
PCI Express Frequency (Mhz): 100

DRAM Performance Control
Performance Enhance.........................:Turbo
Extreme Memory Profile (X.M.P)..........:auto
(G)MCH Frequency Latch....................:auto
System Memory Multiplier....................:auto
Memory Frequency (Mhz)....................:800
DRAM Timing Selectable......................:Auto

Motherboard Voltage Control
Load Line Calibration (LLC)................:disabled
CPU Vcore..........................................:Auto (also tried 1.3250)

I'll take pictures of the screen if it would be easier for you to look at.

A couple pictures will help or a complete list of settings.

ok i will have them up soon. would it be more helpful to put the stock settings, or attempted OC settings?

Your overclocked settings. I still think you should read the guide first before overclocking, you really have a better idea of what your doing after. Then I/we can answer your questions if you still have any. Anyway post the pictures and I'll point out problems if I see any, but that doesn't guarantee a safe or stable overclock.

You are overclocking your memory beyond its capabilities. With your memory settings on Auto, at a 356MHz FSB freq, your memory is running at (356/266)*800 or DDR2-1070 speeds.

This should be your first stop.
HOWTO: Overclock C2Q (Quads) and C2D (Duals) - Guide v1.6.1

Shadow's Gigabyte motherboard OC guide:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/foru [...] _11_0.html
It's for an EP35-DS3L but all the Gigabyte Core2 BIOS's are similar.

Go through the guides. Then go into the BIOS and change the System Memory Multiplier from AUTO to 2.00, 2.00B, or 2.00D - whichever you need to set the Memory Frequency to twice the FSB. Then when you increase the FSB, the memory clock will rise in step with it. If your FSB freq is at 266 MHz, your memory clock should be at 533 MHz.

Download CPU-Z to check your FSB:RAM ratio.

Overclocking memory doesn't accomplish much besides limiting your CPU overclock where the real speed comes from.

Keep your vcore under 1.50 volts and your core temps at load under 70 C (65 C would be better).

Thanks guys. I'll read the guides and get back with you. camera is dead at the moment, so I'll post pics tomorrow.

Here's the BIOS. Thanks again for taking the time to help me out

Set the memory multiplier to its lowest setting. Getting a Q6600 to 3.2GHz is no big deal. You don't mention if you have a good cooler or not, that is also important. I have a machine here in our office running a Q6600 at 3.5GHz with almost that same motherboard.

Yeah I have a cooler. I'm pretty sure it's a masscool and I can't remember the model. And thanks, I'll give that a try and let you know how it works out

Got it running at 3.2Ghz. Upped the CPU voltage to 1.3500 and the restart problem before/after POST seems to have gone away. I tried to up it to 3.4Ghz with the same settings and voltage and got to the Windows login screen. When I tried to login I got a bluescreen. Changed it back to 3.2 and now everything is fine. I have the info on the error that Windows gave me when I successfully logged in if anyone is interested. What do I need to do differently to go higher than 3.2?

If it has anything to do with Thermaltake, it's a BAD IDEA.
