Hi Guys,

I don't really expect to get much of an answer to this question because there is nothing about it anywhere on the net. I am bidding on a Gigabyte ATi Radeon 3850 256MB version. The seller has included a picture of a Gigabyte Radeon 3850 256MB (part no. GV-RX385256H) which is blue and has a distinctive Zalman cooler (this I think is the only version of Gigabytes 3850 256MB that has been reviewed). However, he mentions that the actual card is red and that the box is the same so I strongly suspect he is actually listing part no. GV-RX385256H-B.
I read two reviews about the Zalman cooler version, one said it performs identically to the 512MB version in most games, and one that said that the 256MB version is crippled by a lower core and memory clock speed and has Hynix DDR3 RAM rather than Samsung DDR3 RAM which can not overclock of perform nearly as well (sorry no references, they are in my history somewhere though...).
Gigabytes website lists the GV-RX385256H-B as 'new' and I am wondering whether anyone knows if they sorted out the memory and clock speeds for this 'new' version or if it is a clever bit of marketing. I am keen to overclock so keen to know before the auction finishes on Sunday.

Cheers.

Sure thing, TimeWarrior. Sorry the first post was somewhat wasteful...

Btw. Something I've noticed about Gigabyte's site(s) in the past... When they show a list of items like the full video card lineup, if they feel a card is greater than a similar model, they place it above that card. If lesser than, below... That "H-B" model is below the "H" model, indicating that Gigabyte itself actually feels it's a lesser-performing card than the "H" model.

Are you sure it's not this GV-RX387512H-B that he's actually selling? It's red, ends in H-B, etc... If so, it's actually a 3870 512MB, not a 3850 256MB.

Gigabyte doesn't list a GV-RX385256H-B or GV-RX385512H-B on their website. So, if there's no such thing, it can't be what you said you think it is... I can't find a GV-RX385256H-B HERE on Gigabyte at all... Can you?

Tell the seller to provide actual images of the card, including an image of the sticker on the back indicating the model number. Otherwise, I'd bail on it siting misrepresentation.

Edit: I finally found it listed on Gigabyte's Taiwan site, here. The card's actual page.

Rather than edit again...

Based on comparisons between the two, I'd say the "H-B" model is a "cheap" version of the other. In addition to your memory information, lack of the Zalman cooler, it doesn't have their now famous "Ultra Durable 2" feature, either. With all that considered, I don't think it would be a decent overclocker at all. With it missing all those things, it's just a series of minuses when it comes to overclock potential.

Thanks Razbery,

I had already looked at the Taiwan site, I should have provided the link sorry. Yea, it lacks the Zalman cooler and the Ultra Durable features. Its the Zalman version that has the lower clocks and Hynix RAM but it would probably be fair to assume that the cheaper version has as least that or worse.

Thanks
