i got rid of my old laptop. which at the time when i bought it , i didntknow much bout the computer world. it cost me 1.2k(4yrs ago)

15 inch gateway
2.8g amd athlon x64
1g ram
100ghd
ati x600 mobility

now im getttin a new computer... i originally decided to get another gamin/multimedia laptop. b/c i can do those things and maybe take it to class to take notes.

then i realized that i NEVER took my old laptop to classes cause it was a beast(7.6lb) and the battery was ***(1h) . and i looked around. most gamin laptop are around 15 to 17inch. which is way too big to take notes on. and they cost alot of money . so im gonna build a desktop and then buy a netbook or somthin small to take notes on.

heres wut i have in mind.

a desktop that can:

gaming capablity(new games.. d3, sc2 , and fps shooters)
multimedia capablity(hd vid, remote control)

so obviously its gonna be 22-24inch monitor.
with room to upgrade(so a decent mobo) --> usb3 , windows 7.

my budget? around 1k.
(i got speaker+ mouse)

i have 3 month untill my current laptop is gone(already sold, buy is takin it with him in july)

so im gonna scour for deals around this time.

is this possible to do with 1k?

btw, might spend another 400 on a decent netbook for class(iphone doesnt type very well)

You can make a nice Quad machine or Dual core for that price.

i7 wouldn't be to possible or wouldnt be worth it.

Now if you like AMD, its an alternative for the i7. You can get the 720BE x3(tricore) or the 940BE x4(quadcore).

Intel is always my pick so ill get a list goin here
Do you prefer nvidia or ati before i start

tell you the truth. iam not really a fanboy of anything. lol

i dont really care as long as it gets the job done.

wutever will suit my need. is perfectly fine.

so i guess ill make it a bit more specific.

it will like half half btw multimedia and gamin(used to be a big time gamer, but i stopped... howver, i still wanna have a shot at the lastest games. lol)

but i wanna watch movies from my bed and just have a fast pc.

edit: btw why wouldnt i7 be worth it? i heard all the great things about i7 and how fast it is.lol
but i know its mad expensive..

Thats what i was saying, for 1k, it wouldn't be worth building, you would need that extra 400 for the notebook for the i7 build to work descent.

I'll spec out a Intel build, im sure Myck or thekid will spec out a amd build pretty fast or i will do both.

Phenom II X4 and X3 is so much better price/performance than LGA 775 right now. (OK I exaggerated. It's just better).

Honestly, if you have a $1k+ budget, you should go i7. If not, go AMD.

Edit: the post above mine by knotknut is just about perfect. However, with your gaming intent in mind, I might go Tri Core Phenom II instead of X4 (I believe there is the same combo with the Gigabyte board), and then use the money saved to get an ATI HD 4870 1GB.

Here it is: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.165024

That's $45 less and you only lose 1 core, which won't help in gaming. Clock speed is almost the same, and they both overclock extremely well.

That extra $45 will get you a more current video card. Namely, the 4870.

So that's why Intel LGA 775 stomps AMD on all the reviews?

You completely missed my point. If you have more than $1k to spend, go i7. If you have less, (i.e. you are going for the best price/performance), AM2/AM2+ is the better platform.

For a LGA 775 system to beat a Phenom II you have to pay for a more expensive processor (e.g. Q9400 or Q9550). And my point is that if you have the extra money, might as well go i7.

on an X4 940 build, its basically the same price as the Q9550 build i put together and it barely compares to a Q9550..Intel build was a little over so i went with the 8200 and that was the same price as the x3 720 build

Let me get this straight. A Q9550 costs $275. An X4 940 costs $200, moreover it combos with a fantastic Gigabyte board for $50 in savings. What are you doing to make up this $125 difference?

Phenom II X4 940 > Q9400, which is $30 more expensive. X4 920 > Q8200, though the Q is about $15 cheaper. And the X3 performs just as well as the X4 in a number of scenarios, and is even cheaper.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231209 Upgrade to G.Skill PI Black DDR2 800 $25

I've organized the upgrades inorder of what I would consider best value to worst. Of course, depending your prefrences the order is up to you. If you don't need a OS then that frees up a good portion of the upgrades that would add the most value. With that said, I, like some others have posted an AMD based build which at this time feel that the AM2+ socket is more futureproof and has value than the current LGA 775 socket and CPUs combinations. However, you can't really go wrong either way, but if I were you and I were me, I would start with an AMD build.

edit: Its also possible to hold back on the GPU for now:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102822 512MB 4830 $90 - $15MIR, this will save you $95, but you'll probably want to play at 1280x720 instead of 1920x1080.

Yeah MykC has that listed in his post as a possible upgrade to the Biostar. For another $30 you get a better brand, better customer support, and perhaps better stability. The value of that is going to depend on the buyer.

holy crap?

.........................

wow thats gonna take me like a day to decipher through...
grr
i was hoping to buy the component when they are on special sales... i hate MIR cause last time i pulled mir, i never got my money back.

i have 3 month to build my new system.

so wuts better... quad core or c2d?
i know that alot of games dont fully take advantage of quad core, but down the road, does quad have more potential or 3 core(x3 i guess)

and also i was hoping to squeeze the 24in monitor into my 1k budget. looks like that wont be happening...

and is it possible to have a gamin gfx card with like remote control?
im not too familier with that aspect.. is the remote control connected to the mobo? or the gfx card?

so i guess i should find deals on CPU + mobo 1st(lookin through everything posted here 1st..) cause thats the backbone rite?
then i look for a good gfx card.
then ram + case + psu?

then hdd,dvd roms, etc, then monitor?

Edit: ok after skiming through everything here.. seems like AMD have handsup on this one if i dont go i7.
also, i guess i want the 1920 x1080.

i bought my parents a dell setup bout a month ago. cost bout 600 bucks
with e8400, 160g hd. 4g ram and a 24in monitor, intergrated gfx card. the 1920 res looked really good. and i was able to run cod4 on med seting with intergrated card. i was surprised. lol

so i guess 1920 is superior then the 1280 especially if i wanna watch hd movies on it rite?

i wasnt expectin you guys to pull out the setup and the price listin this fast.im a part of RFD(red flag deals) and there are always deals on stuff. thats why i was askin if its possible to build with that money. thats why i said i got 3 month lol...

but say if i wait and startin buy stuff in like may-june(cause my laptop will be gone by july)
will i find deals to make the builder cheaper and have equal or better quality, cause we all know how fast components gets upgraded. would that be better?

or will it not make a difference when i buy? the price wouldnt change much? (<$50 change)
