Intel/AMD system template $400-$1200

I made this list as quick reference for different buget levels on either an AMD or Intel platform. These are not by any means the best systems at the price range but can be used as a starting point.

By filling out this questionaire you will be helping us help you.

1. What is your budget? Does this include shipping and taxes?
2. What will you be using your comptuer for? Games, what type of games? Casual usage internet, movies, music, MS Office? Work related, Photoshop, video editting, CAD?
3. What parts do you already have? Keyboard/mouse, speakers, Windows OS, monitor (what size is it)?
4. Are you able to order from www.newegg.com? If not, what country will you be ordering from?
5. Do you have any brand loyalties? AMD vs Intel, ATI vs Nvidia, Asus vs Gigabyte or are you a best performance for my money
6. Will you be overclocking your CPU?
7. Do you want to build your system that you can add a second GPU? AKA run SLI or Crossfire?
8. When do you plan to build it?

When wondering how the GPU will handle games read the following article:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-radeon,2218.html
Keep in mind that swapping an ATI card for a similarly priced nvidia card gives about the same performance.
A quick reference to good parts if you want to look at alternatives:

Check each item to see if there are combo deals that could save you money.

More about intel system template 1200
  1. I think the base LGA 775 build should start with a E5200. An upgrade between the Gigabyte G31 and P45 is the P43 board.

Also, the price of the Corsair 4GB 800Mhz memory just changed to $32 - $13MIR. Neat :)

For AMD, in the event that the combo deals with 790GX boards ends, the Giga 770 is a good base mobo.

How about this for LGA 1366: Base motherboard should be the MSI Pro x58 $190 - $20MIR. Sequential upgrades would be that Gigabyte UD3R x58, then the Asus P6T. I'm not so keen on the UD3R in general, though, due to the fact that it only has 4 memory slots, and has notable LAN driver issues.

For memory, I think this OCZ 6GB 1333Mhz is better base since it costs less up front but is the same after rebate, and has faster timings to boot. An upgrade would be the G.Skill 6GB 1600 and/or the OCZ Plat 6GB 1600
  2. I'm going to keep the AMD/LGA systems as is because they are current basically at the same price and it will easier to compare what your getting/giving up for the cost if you want to compare the two platforms head to head.

I don't think the MSI board is worth putting as a starting point. Most people will suggest starting with Gigabyte board because the entire platform base cost is $1000 so the $20 for the gigabyte is a instant recommendation.

I'll add the RAM you suggested.
  3. Replace the G31 mATX & E8400 combo with
    E7400 $119.99 and ASUS P5Q Pro $119.99 combo -$15 & $15 rebate
    $269 - $40 rebates

    G.Skill PI Black DDR2 800 $25 $45
  4. Also base RAM packages have changed prices already.
  5. Well before hand specify +/- in cost of the parts to reflect the price fluctuation :P
  6. Rather than specifying the actual price, which am sure can change overnight, u can give a rough round up like the toms SBM...
  7. Yeah, I'm going to have to do that probably. Too lazy to rework the list right now. I'll proably have the list point to towards specific search fields on newegg.com like

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Property&N=2010170147&OEMMark=0&Manufactory=1666%2C1504%2C1550%2C8476&PropertyCodeValue=523%3A15794%2C524%3A16064&bop=And&Order=PRICE

or wishlists with the specific ones selected.
  8. Math checker malfunction:

    AMD based system: $619 - $70MIR
    Intel based system: $632 - $75MIR 3 pc combo is $270
  9. Suggestions and math updated. Rounded some numbers off to make 5's and 0's.
  10. Made a list that shows parts for intel gaming boxes from $400-$1400.
  11. Updated the list to include AMD and removed combos (changed too rapidly).
  12. The list is a pretty good start. For the Intro AMD sets though I think a ASRock A780FullHD at $56 is a better option for the motherboard.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157149

I really like the GIGABYTE GA-MA770-UD3 suggestion though as it's a great value board. Still I feel that for the under $500 mark the ASRock is a better choice as it's a great board and will let just a bit more money go to other components.
  13. Quote:

That board (ASROCK) is probably the better board overall, but because the build has a PCIe GPU, there isn't much difference between the 770v and 780g with the exception to onboard video. With that said this is really only a template to start from as there are combo deals that trump both.

Also, heaven forbid that we recommend a non-asus/giga motherboard.

I updated the list to reflect price changes and opted to do system configurations every $200 rather than $100.
