Just got an E7400 and a G31-M7 TE motherboard and as soon as I start it up it says:

American Megatrends

G31-M7 TE (G31CM610 BF) Bios Date: 06/10/08
CPU : Intel (R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E7400 @ 2.80GHz
CPU Frequency 1.59 GHz unt : 2
Memory Frequency For DDR2 800
Press F9 for BBS POPUP
Press F12 for BIOS POST Flash
Initializing USB Controllers .. Done.
4088MB OK + 8MB Share Memory

(C) American Megatrends, Inc.
63-0100-009999-00101111-061008-Bear Lake-G31CM610-Y2kC

I have no idea what is wrong but half the time it stops at the Initializing USB Controllers and it just stays there.

whats plugged into your usbs:

an hp printer, usb wireless NIC, that might be the problem

I know defectives mouses can also create some problems.

Unplug anything in usb that you don't and test it out

Okay. So, how does one update the bios when it freezes on power up? I just bought the same setup at Fry's and really would like to know the answer to this.

Hey, crbill I sent an email to biostar, and this was their response

Please hold, we just got info there may be a issue with that particular cpu and motherboard combo, we are working with Fry’s to fix the problem. Please contact us tomorrow to see if there a resolution.

So something is wrong...

My plan is to go back exchange the processor, and see if I can buy a different motherboard...

So, did you exchange you MB and processor? Did you hear back from Biostar? I've got a 30 mile drive, each way, to Fry's, so when they knowingly sell me incompatible combos, it's a real PITA. This is the second time they got me on a MB/processor combo. I'm probably going to stick with Newegg from here on out.

I'm still waiting for shortstuff to explain how to update a bios on a MB that won't POST.

If this is the Fry's Biostar G31-M7 TE MB and E5400 combo, I had exactly the same problem. I got MB version 6.1 and it had a BIOS dated 6/10/2008. I was able to solve the problem as follows:
1. Download new BIOS (currently dated 4/10/2009) to a thumbdrive.
2. Install an older socket 775 CPU. I used a 2.8GHz P4 that I removed from another machine temporarily. I swapped the CPU fan also. If you don't have something to borrow a CPU from, well, you have a problem.
3. Boot up and flash the BIOS per the Biostar instructions. See http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/support/faq.php?S_ID=393
4. I rebooted and used a Linux Live CD to make sure things were working with the older CPU.
5. Shutdown, put the E5400 and fan back in.
6. Powered up, and all was good!

Yeah, it was a real pain. But Fry's is a long drive from my house (about 100 Miles!)
The problem appears to be that the MB will support the E5400, but only with a newer BIOS version than what the Fry's stock comes with.

Hopefully this will help someone else!
