Which 2.5" hd to buy?

I want to buy a 2.5" hd for backup. I narrowed down list of drives to buy:

Hitachi HTS545050B9A300 (Travelstar 5K500.B)
Seagate Momentus 5400.6
Western Digital WD5000BEVT (WD Scorpio® Blue™)

My question is whether I should buy one of the above + separate case, or buy external hd sold by diff. manufacturers, such as

Samsung G2 Portable 2.5"
Seagate FreeAgent
WD My Passport Essential

More about which
  1. It will probably be cheaper to build your own. Also, if the drive fails, it usually easier to open the case on a home built external and you won't have to worry about it voiding any warranties.
  2. I thought I'd share my own benchmarking since you had asked about Seagate Momentus 5400.6

This is a pic of HDTach with the HDD connected to SATA port on the laptop.

I've build my own portable drive with separately purchased 2.5" external drive enclosure.

Here is the HDTach reading of the same drive connected to the USB 2.0 port
    [pretty sad :( ]

IMO the bottleneck is the SATA-to-USB controller on the external enclosure.

If the pre-build ones listed have better performance, then I'd suggest to buy that.
On the other hand if you find any review of those listed as the same performance, then I'd suggest you to build your own.
It's fun to build your own and cheaper too. :)

    Hope this helps
