When hard drive is full but no data

Hello,
my 285Gb active and only partition apparently only has 32Gb left but I haven't saved anywhere near that amount of data. When I go through the partion files manually, only about 40Gb is accounted for...and the rest appeared out of nowhere and is apparently invisible. Note:"Invisible" not "hidden"
