I have been reading that a lot of applications today do not take full advantage of thread optimization and therefore, it is not really that beneficial to go with a quad core vs. a dual core also with the dual core running at a higher frequency (3.0GHz vs. 2.4GHz).

I mainly use my computer for some gaming and programs such as photoshop or themebuilding programs along with simulators. Nothing too intensive and definitely no video editing. I don't really see these patterns changing either.

My old system just crapped out and I need a new one so I was wondering, quad core or dual core? Also, which I am sure is another discussion all to itself, AMD or Intel? I currently have an AMD and was pleased with its performance, but it looks like Intel is taking things over with its better architecture at 45nm. If anyone could shed some light onto the above topics, I would greatly appreciate it. I don't want to spend over $300 on the processor either. Thank you!

No more than $200 on mobo, $300 on cpu, $200 on ram, and will be getting gtx 260.

You have more than enough for an i7 build

Asus P6T = $200
i7 920 = $279
6GB DDR3 = $100

GTX260, HD4870, HD4830

That's the budget for an i7 if ever I saw one! (assuming US$)

i7 920
Asus P6T (possibly the deluxe?)
I believe almost any 6GB DDR3 RAM kit will be under $200. Look for name brands.

^You don't really need more than DDR3 1333 unless OCing to the max.

Correction, should be BSOD (Blue Screen of Death). BSD is Linux related :P.

Anyways, OP, go with an i7. It's more futureproof and given your budget an that LGA775 is EOL you should be fine. Also remember, if you use things like CS4, CAD software, gaming, etc you probably should go with an i7. With these cr@ppy console to PC ports of games (GTAIV any one?) a fast/stronger CPU is beneficial.
