I have a HP pavilion 061 running XP home adution, 2 gb virtual mem., Pentium(R)4 cpu 3.00GHz(2cpus)I have a ATI Radeon graphics processor AGP 9600 series, I need to upgrade to a better Processor for gaming, is a Radeon HD3650/3850 compatable to my computer?
Any AGP video card will be compatible. AGP cards are disappearing though and the ones that are around are kinda expensive. Maybe check craigslist or ebay or open box items on newegg.
That's going to depend on your Power Supply. If you have a weak power supply, like 300W with few amps on the 12v rail, then you may only be able to go with a Radeon 3650. A 2600XT is a little bit faster, but uses more power so that raises the risk of burning out an anemic and cheaply made PSU. If you have a decent 450W unit or better then I'd say go with a Radeon 3850. Well, even a 400W unit would be fine, if it was a decent quality unit anyway. In general though, you probably wouldn't notice too much of a benefit of the 3850 over a 2600XT with your system simply because it would be your CPU holding you back in most cases. Of course I suppose you could always improve your situation if you overclock your CPU , provided you have adequate cooling since those things can run real hot when overclocked.

Yeah, it is difficult to upgrade those prebuilts. Info is spotty so a lot of effort is required to ensure it will work, and then when it does, it probably won't be as good as you hope for (especially when dealing with AGP as those are much rarer now).

You could try an X1650Pro. It'll offer improvement, but it won't play too many of the newest 3D intensive titles very well, if at all. But for ~$50, it's worth a shot. I honestly wouldn't spend more than that on such an old system. Anything more than $50 would be far better served as savings towards a new system. Perhaps even the economical Dave Special.

Theres also a HD 3650 or a HD 3850 in AGP flavors, for your system either would be a great idea. That CPU wouldn't bottleneck any AGP card if you've got a Pentium 4 Dual Core then its good.
3650's and 3850's sell for ~$100 or more. I know it's his/her decision, but I just don't feel $100 or more is worth spending to prolong the life of an already aging PC's gaming career for another 6-12 months. I'd rather keep struggling thru the games I have now while I saved up for an entirely new rig. Plus, since it's a pre-built, you also have to worry about powering the better cards.
