DVD writer dead

Any particular reason some of these fail so fast? I've had two recently stop working.

They both eject fine and Win 7 sees the drive control panel is happy with it but it pops up and says insert disk when I insert a testing working disk.

One was a Dell and the other was a Liteon I think.

Any tricks to reviving them?

  1. Oh and they are SATA if that matters.
  2. If the disc is scratched, the drives may be having a hard time reading it. Try some other discs, if you haven't already.
  3. Thanks. I've tried several disks. I am going to try the drive in another computer. I did have a spare drive that worked in this computer by just swapping out this bad drive.

If another drive is reading the discs, then the drive is failing.
