I have been running XP with 4gb of dual channel ram (4x OCZ 1GB DDR2) in my PC for a while but last week I had some issues and it turns out that memory slot 3 on my motherboard is now shot..I tested all ram sticks in the other slots 1 at a time and its all good..Its only when I use that slot the machine goes nuts..3 beeps at boot up etc..
Anyway, I now have 3x 1gb sticks in Slots 1, 2 and 4 but its running in single channel mode..Should I stick with this or drop to 2gb for Dual Channel??
My most resource intensive tasks are probably converting AVIs to DVD or vice versa or running VS 2008 or SQL 2008..
I have 2x1gb on this machine and i swapped dual channel for single channel about a week ago to see if theres any difference. So far I have seen none, windows loads in about the same time, so do game levels and FPS rates also didnt change. Im starting to wonder when DC actually gives any advantage(if at all) and why is there so much fuss about it.
you can always pick up 2x2gb chips for about 50$ if you need to
but i wouldnt worry about it and just run 3gb if you have 32bit windows
you only get to use 3.5gb or less anyway.
have you examined your memory slot thats bad maybe there is a small piece of debris or something jammed in it.. check it out good with a high intensity flashlight so you can see it in detail.
