I do not "game" but I like my music and photos and of course surf...I heve been looking at a hp e9150t....i7-920..8gb DDR3...640GB(2x320GB SATA HDDs)...1GB NVIDIA GTS 250...from hp. I have no idea about the MOBO, cooling system, fans,Power -Supply. I have a friend that works at FRYS and he suggested building (he will not me ) build my own here is his suggestion.....Tower Antec nine hundred two,MOBO...ASUS P6T,i7-920,DDR3_6G memory. HX620W (corsair) power supply, Seagate 750GB hard drive with a GTS 250 graphics card. They both cost about the same BUT which would be best foe me...?
His proposed PC is much better, despite 2G less memory that you will not miss. It's a lot of machine for music, photos, and surfing. Actually, it will game pretty well lol. All the parts are quite good - the vid card is fine but its one of the only things a gamer might spend more money on.
If budget is an issue, and if you don't expect your usage to change, you could save several hundred dollars building a Core 2 Duo machine or (gasp) even an AMD system (though your friend might prefer to build Intel/nVidia because he's familiar with those parts)
If he has done this before, you could have some fun watching him build it . . . and maybe help. You'll have a fine machine.
Enjoy!

For music, Internet and light photo processing, get the cheapest prebuilt system you can locate.
This level of computing does not require very much power and the builds you are looking at are all way overkill.
A cheap box with a good warranty will surf the net and listen to music exactly the same as an expensive custom build.

Agrred. If you arent crunching tons of numbers, playing the newest games at high resolutions with high framerates, you dont need all that. A decent cpu, a sound card is all you really need, and 2 gigs of ram at most even

I would go with your friends build, it is a better mobo to be sure, but if you will never game the gt250 is not needed, save your money and throw in a 9400gt or 4350/4550 and spend more on storage like 1tb samsung f1
Overall the i7 build is never going to be used to its true potential here, but it will last a good few years in the future.
Dont forget the Manufactuer warranty on the Hp, although all parts are at least 12months protected, so if anything breaks you can speak to part maker direct for RMA.
I agree with others, your building an expensive high end machine for simple tasks that even a netbook will handle flawlessly. Personally for the tasks you've mentioned I keep my processor downclocked to 800mhz and I don't feel any slow down.
Either way it's your money, if you want to build that monster PC go for it, if you'd like to save money we can help in that regard too.
