Is OC right for me?

Very new to computers and the only thing I know about OC is that it is risky and it boosts performance. My main question is: My computer is being built to play video games (atm WoW and possibly SWTOR when it comes out), do I need to OC? and if not, when should i start thinking about OCing my comp?

I am currently running:

Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D Deluxe
CPU: Intel i7 840
RAM 8GB (4GB x2) DDR3 1333MHz
Graphics: Diamond Radeon HD 5850 1GB DDR5 PCIe Dual Link DVI
PSU: Ultra LSP 650 Pro

  1. for dailly use u don't need OC ! default good for game & OC no guarantee ! can damage hardware !
  2. nah , with those games you playing no need for overclocking ,maybe next year
beside what res you use on playing games ?!
  3. There's only two reasons to overclock: because you need the additional performance to do something you want to do or because you can.

Currently, you do not need to.
  4. +1 Specs are good, the games you mentioned won't really need extra power-
  5. If your only gaming on that build, drop it to 4Gb of 1600Mhz ram,

  6. Not overclocking a processor is like driving the speed limit! Push the right pedal, granny!
  7. My Gf always drives at the speed limit,

I respect her choice to do so, I on the other hand am a Psycho rider, and thats my choice, seeing a pattern here? :P

  8. It is true that you will not need to overclock, but it's still fun.
  9. Yup, and that was the Op's question as I read it, 'Do I NEED to' which is a resounding no,
but the options are as Jsc states, wanting to, or needing to, I clock because I want to, my Gf with identical rig doesn't :)
now I'm seeing a pattern lol, I'm the risk-taker in the relationship hehe (No news there :P)
