Icons take 3 minutes to appear at start up

Hello,
I have windows xp pro and it starts fine except when you get to the icons loading on the desktop. All that comes up for 3 minutes is my back ground picture and nothing else, after 3 minutes eveything else comes up. Any suggestions I am really stuck and frustrated... Thank you

Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

Something is set to start up at boottime that's holding other actions up. Go from Start to Run and iontot he Open box, type msconfig then press Enter.

Click he StartUp tab and untick anything in the list that doesn't really need to be there - my own opinion would be everything except a firewall and the anti-virus but you might to leave some entries in. You aren't disabling programmes, just choosing when to open them.

Click Apply and OK and let the system restart. When it comes back up tick the "Don't show this message again" box and press Enter. If the problem has gone away you could go back in and tick one enntry at a time if you really want to find out what caused this.
