I recently had to reformat my computer and now i tried to reinstall the router. It will not work and I called the help line. They said I have to pay for an update. Is there any way around this??

What?? Who's they? You do not need to "reinstall" your WRT54G! You can just hook up one of your PCs to the router through an ethernet cable, then go to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser.
You can also visit this page to download the software and user manuals of your router. Again, I have to stress that you do not need to pay anything.
Also, please post your question in the correct section next time (this should've been in the Networking section of this forum).
Yeah don't pay for updates. I bought one of those exact routers second hand in a yard sale, didn't even get the install software and it was still a snap to get running.

I had a nightmare with mine too, ended up getting dsl with a free modem/wifi router from Verizon , it works great, and the Linksys is sitting on a shelf where it belongs. lol
