So I'm working on a new build. I have my "Server PC" and my gaming rig is almost complete. I've done a lot of KVM research along with Kavoom which allows you to use one keyboard/mouse by moving the mouse off the screen to the next screen. However I'm looking for a KVM switch that will be depenedent on it's own. Without the need to fire up my Server so that I can use the mouse/keyboard.
Is there a KVM out there that allows you to switch between computers even if the main computer is turned off? Trying to reduce the heat wave in my home office..Get's prettttttttty hot
There is no main computer with a KVM switch. Your keyboard, monitor, and mouse plug into the output port. Cables connect the computers to the input ports.
I have been using a 4 port KVM switch for years. I usually have three computers up and running. I reserve the fourth port for testing. It's really handy not to need to break the system down to test another computer.
Two things to keep in mind: most that I know of use VGA not DVI i/o. Second, consider the cost of cables.
Belkin sells a two port unit with integral cables for about $80. My 4 port unit included cables for two computers in the purchase price. Extra cables were about $30 each. I have not priced KVM switch prices recently, but I suspect that a 4 port switch, including all the cables needed will probably run $180 - $200.
Fast response as always... Thanks guys I have the information that I need. I was hoping that I could switch from PC 1 to PC 2 without having the host machine on. Both PC1 and PC2 have screens....with that in mind the only way It would work I would need two keyboards/ two mouse
Thanks again Fellas!
Have a great weekend
Regards,
Johnny
