I have two separate networks both using the Netgear DG834 routers and all machines on both networks have static IP addresses. All machines running on either networks are on XP Pro with windows firewall disabled.
Site 1:
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Site 2:
Gateway: 192.168.2.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
I have created a VPN on the networks that allows the networks to communicate with each other. Every machine from either network can ping one another and I can access site 1's router from site 2, and site 2's router from site 1.
However I cannot seem to file share. I have added IP addresses of the gateways and machines I wish to access to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc on each machine I wish to file share with.
I have files I need to access from site 1 and on a machine on site 2 I have tried to access \\192.168.0.2\share however it gives me an error message about permissions and access is denied. 'Everyone' is added to the permissions on the folder with full access.
So now I'm a little confused... can anyone shed some light as to how to get the machines file sharing correctly
Although there is share permissions, having set to "everyone" causes a lot of problems, you have to consider the effective permissions when you combine NTFS with share permissions. Check the NTFS permission, because you may be authorised at the share level, there can be underlying symptoms that could relate to NTFS related issues.

I cant add specific permissions from one network to the other because they cannot 'see' each other. I'm not sure why at all. I would have thought if the machines can ping each other then I should be able to see either network in my network places?
****Although you can ping, that only confirms there is a physical (logical) connection between them. As so they can communicate, but to me it seems like a software related problem.

I've just done a bit of researching regarding enabling netbios in these routers- I'm using v4 routers and it turns out only v1 and v2 with firmware 3.x.x or less had the netbios feature. The ones i'm working with do not but apparently I should be able to map network drives- and I can't do this. So it sounds a though its something to do with the routers themselves being the problem. Do you know if there a netbios workaround?
