APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: within a month

BUDGET RANGE: $US 800

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: running multiple programs, watching media, gaming not that important

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: speakers, keyboard, mouse, optical drives, hard drives (have a few but no sata drives- perhaps I should get a new one as primary drive (faster?) and use my other ones for storage/archive)-opinions welcome!

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.ca, ncix.com

PARTS PREFERENCES: Interested an Antec case for quiet operation and lots of optical/hard drive bays. love the 1200 or the cosmos but might be out of price range

OVERCLOCKING: not really interested

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: unknown

MONITOR RESOLUTION: would love a 30 inch display of some sort (obviously for additional price beyond stated budget), recommendations welcome!

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I would like a quiet PC, with lots of room for additional drives. I currently have 3 optical drives (IDE) that I would like to move to new system, also 3 IDE hard drives. I currently have an IDE expansion card- I suppose this will be needed as I assume new motherboards no longer have IDE slots? Forgive a newbie!!!

Thanks for checking out my thread, all feedback welcome!!!

Err dun think u even need a discrete so the current best IGP solution paired off with a nice quad would suffice for me

$830 + tax ~$100 + shipping ~$70 = $990, whatever is leftover for your GPU, 4670 or 4830. $80-$115
You can upgrade to the Phenom II 940 quad core for $100.
If you can get the case locally you can save $45 on shipping.

thanks for all the terrific input. As for why I would want to hang on to the IDE drives, I guess I was just thinking that I have a burner and a plextor that work pretty well and are pretty fast, so why re-buy them. Do you think if I am running them off IDE it will slow the system down?

Well any sata $25 dvd burner will out there will surely be equal (probably better) than those IDE drives you have.

I actually made like 3 different builds for you before settling on the i7, and one of them was a 790GX + Deneb. I would say it all comes down to what your "multiple programs" are.

The fact is, i7 or PII or C2Q are probably all going to work for you. It's just a question of how robust you want it and what the final price tag is.
