Changing a laptop drive...

Hello,

I currently use a 2.5 SATA 8Mb 54OOrpm drive in my three years old Asus f3jc laptop. Can I replace the existing drive by 7200rmp 16Mb knowing that the cache and rpm are much higher?
Does it depend on my mother board or something?
