Hi, im building a rig for the first time and so far i have a 9800gt, cm-690 case, 650EA PSU, and the ram etc etc. I need to know what the best price/performance chip and mobo is around $300..any help appreciated greatly

This is for a gaming build? Choose the CPU you want and then get a motherboard to match. $200 CPU / $100 MB is a rough estimate of what each would cost.
You can find more price/performance comparisons here

Im wanting to make a gaming pc, but the i7 is over my budget. I have 4g ddr3 ram. I was leaning toward the phenom x3 720, since its am3 and can use the ram and it looks affordable. As far as the gaming, only wanting to use a single video card, no sli or anything..

You can get by with 790GX type motherboard with some overclocking at around $130.00. The 790FX is better for overclocking, they are costing around $180. They the AM3 motherboards at newegg.com.
