I have an SLI capable motherboard, but if I wanted to use a single card 4870x2 could I keep my motherboard or does it need to be Crossfire compatable even though I would only be using one 4870x2? Thank you.

No need to replace your motherboard. 4870x2 is designed to work in a single slot. Doesn't matter if it is a SLI or Crossfire board. You do not have to enable crossfire to use it. That's the beauty of dual gpu boards. SLI or Crossfire performance in a single slot!
