I am using an AMD 64 bit 2GHz processor with a gig of memory. I would like to buy a graphics card to allow me to play games such as Oblivion because the onboard graphics chip just doesnt cut it. Can anyone offer me any advice on what is the best card to buy please?

That's a similar spec to my old machine, I used to run a 7800GT and played Oblivion all the way through, anything more modern than that should be fine. Does the motherboard have an AGP slot or PCIe? If PCIe something like an ATi 4670 should be a massive improvement over integrated graphics!
Do know your computer manufacturer and model number so we can see what kind of bus interface your mobo has?
We need to know your power supply specs are (how many amps that are the 12v rail)
Also, can you retrieve the actual model number from your amd cpu? Under windows press windowsKey+R and type in: sysdm.cpl and hit enter. The model number should be listed near the frequency.(Ex. 3000+)

Newer vga cards come with lots of ram onboard. That ram needs to be represented on your PC, and I don't think your 1gbof ram will work well. Plan on adding ram to your system. You can get a 4gb kit of DDR2-800 ram for <$25 after rebate.
You can't get a vga card suggestion without providing they type of vga slot you have(agp or pci-e)
Knowing the +12v amps capability pf your psu will determine how good a vga card is possible.
