So i've just builed my rig with a core i7 920 CPU, cooled by TRUE-120..
Knowing that i sux at applying thermal paste, and ive tried like 5 times (using plastic bag method), I just couldnt get it right, and just used the alt method by just spreading a grain of salt size in the mid, and let the pressure do the job..
My temps are around 39C Idle (BIOS Reading, dunno how accurate that is, dont have any OS atm to try other software), with 26C ambient..
Is that normal? Since ive been reading around the net of idle temps around 30-35C
Seems a bit high, but not too worrisome. If you really only used a grain of salt-sized spot, that could be too little. Normal recommendation is to use a grain of rice-sized spot or a touch more. That's probably at least 4-5x as much as a grain of salt (the grains of salt that I've seen are very tiny).

I think your temps are fine. Maybe you should do something about ambient temp and that will bring down the rest of the temps. But anyway, you are fine.
I have tried lapping my HSF and CPU.. but unfortunately not much of a change was made on the temps ( actually they got a tad higher ).. this may be because of the ambient temp tho..
i was wondering.. if i OC this beast to lets say, a safe 3.6GHz, how much of a temperature rise would i typically have?
am not planning on overclocking on these kinda ambient temps, since i acknoledge they are a bit high (summer time eh ;/), but when i move back to the UK in sept ambient temps should be around 20Cish or so..
